DRI Honors Douglas G. Houser with Louis B. Potter Lifetime Professional Service Award
Thursday, October 17, 2013
In a career that spans more than 50 years, Douglas G. Houser has been honored many times by his peers, his law firm and his community. Doug has just been recognized by the Defense Research Institute (DRI) with the Louis B. Potter Lifetime Professional Service Award.
"I am particularly pleased and honored to receive this award recognizing a lifetime of professionalism," Doug said. "This award is very meaningful at a time when the legal profession is sometimes accused of becoming more a business than maintaining the values and character of a profession."
Doug received the award at the annual meeting of the 22,000 member DRI, held in mid-October in Chicago, Ill. The award recognizes a career where "professionalism goes beyond observance of the legal profession's ethical rules and serves the best interests of clients and the public in general." The award honors Louis B. Potter, DRI's second executive director, with whom Doug shared a close working and professional relationship.
"We are delighted by DRI's recognition of Doug's extraordinary commitment to clients, our profession, and the highest standards of practice," said Jess Millikan, firm president in the firm's San Francisco office. "Doug is a lawyer who has always gone ‘above and beyond,' and the Potter award is a fitting tribute to his contributions."
Doug's commitment to DRI, a measure of his commitment to the profession, began more than 40 years ago. He served twice on DRI's Board of Directors, and also served as National Treasurer, chaired the first Annual Membership Convention in the early 1990s and lectured at DRI National Continuing Education programs dozens of times both here in the U.S. and Europe.
At a local level, Doug has also held many leadership positions, including president of the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel (OADC), the state arm of DRI. His leadership has paved the way for a number of other Bullivant lawyers who have held important positions in both national and state DRI organizations.
Bullivant is proud not only of Doug's achievements, but also of the leadership that he brings to the many lawyers who have practiced with him at the firm. Countless lawyers have honed their craft under his tutelage and consider him a mentor. Doug's commitment to the practice of law continues as he represents clients, counsels younger lawyers, and contributes to the legal profession, delivering zealous representation balanced by high standards of professionalism.
