Practice Experience

Matt Hedberg's experience in jury and bench trials informs his approach to coverage matters where he represents insurance carriers in both contractual and extra-contractual claims. His experience includes trials involving first-party coverage issues for both personal lines and commercial lines of coverage.

Matt's representation is not limited to trial work. He understands that clients require a balance between risk and reward. As such, he works to bring many cases to conclusion through successful motion practice, sparing the cost of trying a case, but achieving the desired outcome. That includes a successful Motion for Summary Judgment (MSJ) in a $75 million construction defect coverage case in Colorado that was upheld in the appellate court.

He is also familiar with and successful in Alternative Dispute Resolution through arbitration and mediation. In fact, many of his matters reach a successful conclusion without trial, but Matt's ability to obtain cost effective results is grounded in his courtroom skills.

Matt came to Bullivant from Boise, Idaho where he gained some of his early experience in commercial litigation across a wide range of disputes. In addition to Oregon, he continues to practice in Idaho as well as California.

Matt grew up in a small farming and logging community in north central Idaho. There, he learned the value of hard work during his days delivering newspapers on his paper route, bucking hay bales during haying season, and driving truck and combine during harvest season. After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Navy as a Cryptologic Technician - Collection (CTR).

Matt graduated from the University of Washington School of Law, where he was an editor of the law review. He earned Bachelor's degrees from the University of Idaho, graduating summa cum laude.

Not long after completing law school, he was able to fulfill a life-long dream of visiting a spring training camp. As an amateur baseball player, he long admired the hard work and sheer joy of "the boys of summer." The first foul ball he caught on that visit can be seen in his office every day. It is tossed back and forth as he works on research, drafts briefs, or writes one of his winning MSJs.
