With great sadness, we regret to tell you that our friend and colleague, Dick Whittemore, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 5, 2015. He was returning from a weekend of sports car racing, a passion for him that was exceeded only by his devotion to his wife, Carolyn, his family, and his clients.
Dick was a tremendous legal advocate: respected by clients, adversaries, and judges. He was also a devoted teacher, spending countless hours working with newer lawyers in Bullivant's trial academy and sharing his deep, practical knowledge of trial practice with all his colleagues. Dick also mentored younger attorneys by volunteering his time to judge local and national legal competitions.
As a firm leader serving for years on the Board of Directors and various committees, he shared his wisdom and incredible sense of humor with us. Both will be very much missed. Dick carried himself through the world with confidence, grace and dignity and will forever be remembered and honored by his friends and colleagues.
Dick had more than 30 years of experience practicing civil law in major exposure cases along the west coast in both state and federal court. His experience with these litigation matters included products liability defense, clergy malpractice, medical malpractice and complex commercial litigation. He tried more than 55 cases to verdict over his career including several wrongful death cases.
We are committed to his legacy of advocacy for his clients and the matters that were entrusted to him. The work in which he was engaged is being managed by most of the same lawyers, paralegals and staff who worked side-by-side with him. If you have questions about representation, please contact Loren Podwill, president of Bullivant Houser Bailey, at 503-499-4620 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
In 2017, the firm established the Richard J. Whittemore Checkered Flag Award in Dick's honor.
