Experience

Ryan Boyle is an associate who focuses his practice on product liability defense, personal and catastrophic injuries, and toxic torts. Ryan was selected for inclusion in the Oregon Rising Stars list for 2008 and 2009. The honor recognizes the top 2.5 percent of Oregon attorneys under age 40.

Among product manufacturing clients, Ryan has represented an ammunition manufacturer in a complex catastrophic gun failure matter, an axle manufacturer in a severe tractor trailer malfunction case, and an electrical switch gear seller who allegedly integrated defective insulation and component parts into the switch gear.

Ryan's experience in the area of personal injury matters has also included the defense of large grocery retailers, pharmacy chains, and retail outlets. Recently, Ryan successfully second chaired a $10 million catastrophic injury case involving an injured subcontractor employee for a mine operator. The plaintiff attempted to reinsert a 100 pound drill steel into an industrial rock drill while the drill was in rotation causing significant injuries including an arm amputation and alleged traumatic brain damage. The plaintiff alleged that the mining company violated federal mining regulations involving training and state safety statutes. The jury deliberated for a day and a half before returning a defense verdict. As a result of the victory, the plaintiff agreed to forego his appeal.

Ryan also has experience in toxic tort defense. In this area, he has represented numerous manufacturers of asbestos-containing products in defense of various tort claims. Ryan successfully obtained the dismissal of a drywall product manufacturer facing a $2.4 million settlement demand in a case with several contested issues including whether the diagnosis of asbestos-related disease was correct and whether the product was defectively designed.

Ryan also represents clients in the arts, entertainment and sports industry. He has represented a Division I men's basketball coach in contract negotiations with a major regional university. He also currently represents a large music and entertainment venue in reviewing performance and service contracts. Ryan also represented a state high school athletic organization in a matter involving a baseball injury that was resolved favorably at trial.

Prior to joining Bullivant, he served as a law clerk with the Trial Division of the Criminal Litigation Unit of the Oregon Department of Justice. He also played college basketball at the University of Puget Sound and was a Northwest Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference selection during his Junior and Senior years at UPS.
