JOB DESCRIPTION
Bullivant Houser Bailey is seeking an experienced Controller to lead our financial operations and support strategic growth.
Position Overview:
The Controller will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for the financial management, reporting, budgeting, and compliance functions of the firm. This individual will be instrumental in driving financial performance, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and guiding strategic financial decisions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee all aspects of the firm’s financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, billing, payroll, trust accounting, and financial reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and budgets
- Monitor cash flow and manage banking relationships
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, tax filings, and audit requirements
- Develop internal controls, financial policies, and procedures
- Partner with firm leadership to develop long-term financial strategies
- Supervise and mentor finance and accounting staff
- Manage the annual budgeting process and provide variance analysis
- Work with external accountants, auditors, and vendors as needed
- Utilize legal accounting software (e.g., 3E) to maintain accurate financial records
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior finance role
- Experience working in a law firm environment strongly preferred
- Experience with both accrual and cash accounting methods is essential
- Deep knowledge of law firm billing practices, trust accounting, and compliance standards
- Strong proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel
- Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability
